The great Indian meteorologist Anna Mani was born on 23 August 1918 in Peerumedu, Kerala state, India. She is also known as 'The Weather Lady of India'. Born in a Christian family, Anna Mani had a great love for studies. The passion for reading books was such that by the age of 12, he had read almost every book in her public library. Her father was a civil engineer and owner of large cardamom plantations.

Anna Mani, a student of Nobel laureate Professor CV Raman, graduated in Physics and Chemistry from Presidency College, Chennai then Madras in 1939 and received a scholarship for research at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1940. After this, Anna Mani went to Imperial College London in 1945 for further studies. From where she returned as an expert in weather forecasting equipment.

When Anna Mani returned to India in 1948, she started a job in the Meteorological Department and changed the way of weather forecasting in the country. By 1953, Anna Mani had become Chief of Meteorological Department which was earlier dominated by men. She has also authored several research papers related to meteorological instruments. While working in the Meteorological Department, Anna Mani was made the Deputy Director General of the department in 1969. Not only this, she also set up a workshop in Bangalore. It was from this workshop that Anna Mani used to measure wind speed and solar energy. She was known as the weather lady of India.




Followed Gandhian ideology

She was greatly influenced by Gandhian ideology. Whole life walked on the values ​​of Gandhiji. She mostly wore Khadi clothes. In 1987, he was awarded the INSA KR Ramanathan Medal. Anna Mani lived in Thiruvananthapuram in her last moments. Mani devoted her full life to science. She never married. She was away from public life after the stroke in 1996. He breathed his last on 16 August 2001 in Thiruvananthapuram.
