Justice UU Lalit sworn in as 49th Chief Justice of India

 


Justice Uday Umesh Lalit was today sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the country. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath to him. Justice UU Lalit has been appointed as the Chief Justice after Justice NV Ramana retired on August 26. He will be the 49th Chief Justice of the country. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit replaces Justice NV Ramana, who retired as Chief Justice yesterday, August 26. On August 10, the President appointed Justice Lalit as the Chief Justice. His tenure as Chief Justice will be till November 8.

Justice UU Lalit was born on November 9, 1957. From June 1983, he started his career as advocate. After practicing in the Bombay High Court till 1985, he shifted to Delhi in January 1986. In April 2004, he was given the status of Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court. He was appointed as Special Public Prosecutor of CBI in the case of 2G. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014.

Specialist in Criminal Law

Justice Lalit is considered a specialist in Criminal Law. He was directly elevated as a Supreme Court Judge from the Bar on 13 August 2014. He was then appointed as the acting chairman of the National Legal Services Authority in May 2021. He has participated in trials as Public Prosecutor of CBI in all 2G case under the orders of Supreme Court. He has also served as a member of the Legal Services Committee of the Supreme Court for two terms. 

UU Lalit's family

Justice Lalit has two sons, Shriyas and Harshad. One of his sons is a lawyer by profession and the other lives in America.Lalit's family has been in the profession of advocacy for 102 years.UU Lalit's grandfather used to practice law in Solapur district of Maharashtra. His father Umesh Ranganath Lalit, who is now 90 years old, has been a well-known lawyer, who has been a judge in the Bombay High Court. While Lalit's wife Amita Lalit is an educationist who runs a children's school in Noida. Apart from this, he has a son, Shriyas, a lawyer by profession, who is a mechanical engineer from IIT Guwahati and his wife Raveena is also a lawyer. Whereas his other son Harshad is not in law and he lives in America with his wife Radhika.

It is not that Justice UU Lalit inherited success in advocacy. When he came to Delhi, he lived in a two-room flat in Mayur Vihar. But after this he became one of the top criminal lawyers of the country. He participate in many high profile cases. Even in the 2G scam case, the Supreme Court appointed him as a special PP.
