What should be new name for AIIMS

There is a fury over the renaming of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The Faculty Association expressed concern over the discussion on renaming AIIMS, saying that any such move would result in loss of identity of AIIMS. AIIMS, which is known for its doctors, cheap treatment and reliable hospital in India, should its name be changed? The Faculty Association of Doctors of AIIMS  has written a letter seeking suggestions from the members as to what should be changed in the names of 23 AIIMS in the country.

Opinions sought from AIIMS across the country

Suggestions have been made regarding names of AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Raipur, AIIMS Rae Bareli, AIIMS Rishikesh, AIIMS Bhopal, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Nagpur and AIIMS Madurai. Six new Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, AIIMS Patna, Raipur – Chhattisgarh, Jodhpur and Rishikesh were approved in the first phase of Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana and their operations have started. Out of 16 AIIMS built in 2015 and 2022, MBBS and OPD have been started in 10, while only MBBS classes have been started in two. Four institutes are in different stages of construction. AIIMS Delhi was established in 1956 and it is the identity of the country.

Faculty raised concern

The Faculty Association of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (FAIMS) expressed concern over the discussion on renaming AIIMS, saying any such move would destroy the identity of the institute. If identity is lost, institutional recognition will be lost both within and outside the country. This is why well-known and established institutions have had the same name for centuries—be it Oxford, Cambridge or Harvard. India is a name for IITs that give an identity to the institute, and there is no proposal to replace them. The same is true for AIIMS," the letter read. Furthermore, the sense of identity is so strong that the universities of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras continue to bear the same name, even though the cities where they are located have been renamed Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai.

There was a proposal to change the name

If sources are to be believed, the Health Ministry had sought proposals related to change of name from 23 AIIMS in the country. At present, all AIIMS including AIIMS Patna, AIIMS Bhubaneswar are known by the name of their cities, but the Faculty Association believes that despite the renaming of cities like Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai, there are Madras High Court and Madras University, Calcutta High Court and the University in the same way. Bombay University is there so what is the point of doing this with AIIMS. According to sources, the central government wants to name 23 AIIMS after local heroes, freedom fighters and historical monuments.
